Earth Warming Faster Than Previously Thought

March 16, 2000—CBC News reports that scientists meeting to discuss Canada’s record-breaking temperatures say that the earth is warming much faster than was predicted several years ago.

Canadian scientists point to a number of abnormalities believe to be linked to global warming trends:

• Record high-temperature have been broken almost every month this winter
• A drastic drop in snowcover is raising concerns about a failed winter wheat crop and summer drought
• Early migration of Canadian geese
• A 40% drop in the thickness of arctic sea ice.

David Barber of the University of Manitoba expressed concern that increased climate instability could cause serious disruption to Canada’s economy, environment and ecosystems.
