Winter Flood-causing Rains Now Frequent in U.K.

March 17, 2000—The BBC reports that flood-causing downpours are become more frequent during the winter months in the
U.K. Scientists point to global warming as the likely cause.

In a new report published in the International Journal of Climatology, scientists from the University of East Anglia and the
Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research found that the winter months in Britain are getting wetter due to
increasingly frequent heavy downpours of rain. The downpours are often so heavy that storm drains can’t accommodate the
water and flooding results. By contrast, the scientists found that summer days with heavy rainfall are becoming less and less
frequent, contributing to periods of summer drought.

Several scientists involved in the study have identified global warming as a likely cause of the change in weather patterns. While
they say natural changes in climate can’t be ruled out entirely, current shifts in British weather patterns mirror changes predicted
in models of human-induced climate change.
