Kansas Senator Wants More Research on Farmland as Sink for CO2
April 8, 2000 The Wichita Eagle reports that Republican Senator Pat Roberts is urging lawmakers to consider his bill that would increase research into how farmland absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping to prevent climate change.
Roberts bill would increase funding for research examining the rates at which reduced land tillage, creation of buffer strips and the Conservation Reserve Program result in increased carbon dioxide sequestration. Much of the research is expected to be conducted at the University of Kansas, home to a state-of-the-art carbon cycle remote sensing program, and at Kansas State University.
A similar bill has been introduced in the House by Congressman Bob Schaeffer (R-Colorado).
