Seattle Commitment: No Net GHGs From New Electricity

April 14, 2000—Environmental News Service reports that Seattle’s City Coucil has passed a proposal to reduce to zero the city’s net greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation.

Designed to combat global warming, the proposal calls for use of hydropower and new solar, wind, geothermal and landfill gas technologies. Additionally, the city plans to step-up its energy conservation efforts. Any electricity needs that require the burning of fossil fuels will be offset by investments in forests.

Seattle Mayor Paul Schell and Seattle councilor Heidi Willis proposed the resolution in honor of Earth Day 2000. Schell said that the measure would not only ensure that Seattle did its part in protecting against global warming but it would also set a precedent for cities around the world to follow.

Known for its strong environmental record, Seattle has been a leader in water and energy conservation. Its highly successful water conservation program has kept regional water consumption levels steady since 1980, despite a 25% increase in population.
